New Outlook for Windows Can't Open .ICS Files

Microsoft recently released an updated version of Outlook for Windows, now called Outlook (New) instead of Outlook (Classic). Unfortunately, this new Outlook has a known limitation: it cannot open or load event and calendar .ics files, a feature that worked in the classic version.

Since this is an issue within Microsoft’s software, we’re unable to provide a direct fix. However, some workarounds can help you continue adding events and calendars successfully.

Workaround: Use Outlook.com or Office 365

The easiest and most reliable solution is to add events or subscribe to calendars using the Outlook.com or **Office 365 **options:

  • Use Outlook.com for personal Microsoft accounts.
  • Use the Office 365 option for work or school Microsoft accounts.

When you add an event or subscribe to a calendar through one of these online options, your events will automatically sync to your desktop version of Outlook, even in the new Outlook experience.
